Let’s talk about Leroy Sané

Fast, blistering, supersonic, swift. All of these adjectives and they will still fall short to describe how fast Leroy Sane truly is. But pace is not all that he has. Playing on the wings, Leroy has terrorized full backs on a weekly basis. He can score, run, assist and can be a major asset for any team to have. Currently playing for giants of Germany (Bayern Munich) let’s understand Sane’s journey till now.

Early life and Schalke:

Sané was born on 11 January 1996 in Essen, Germany. Sané began his football career in 2001 with the SG Wattenscheid 09. He joined Schalke 04 in 2005. He joined Bayer Leverkusen three years later before returning to Schalke’s youth programme in 2011. In 2014, he signed a three-year long first-team contract with Schalke. Sane made his Bundesliga debut against VfB Stuttgart on April 20, 2014.

For Schalke, Leroy Sane bagged 13 goals and 8 assists in 57 matches. He was young, fast, talented and ready for new ventures. That is when pep Guardiola and Manchester City set their eyes on him.

Sane at City:

This is where Leroy Sane exploded. Manchester City saw the potential in Leroy and made a calculative bet on the German winger. After spending 5 years at the club its safe to say Leroy was a fruitful and wise investment. In 135 matches he played for City, Leroy managed to secure 39 goals and 45 assists. An impressive GA of 84 in 135 matches for a youngster is remarkable. Leroy Sane didn’t disappoint.

Signed by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in 2016 for a sum of 37 million looks like a steal deal in retrospect. However, when Manchester City paid Schalke 37 million euros, there were a few raised eyebrows. In England, Leroy Sane was a largely unknown person. But it didn’t take long for him to make his mark on the Premier League. The numbers speak for themselves, yet they fail to communicate how lethal Leroy Sane was in important games.

Sane has an impressive record against Liverpool. In the 2018/19 season Man city found themselves 7 points behind league leaders Liverpool, they were facing them the next. A defeat would almost certainly mean that the title goes to Merseyside. Leroy Sane scored the winning goal in that match and it meant, City were still alive in the title race. City went on to win the premier league by a single point, and all of that started from this match against Liverpool.

Sane has scored important goals at crucial stages for Man City. He was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017/18 – the first time a City player had won the prize since Peter Barnes in 1975/76. Leroy won an impressive 7 trophies with Manchester City and was shaping up to be the next megastar. This potential peaked Bayern’s Interest in the young forward.

Bayern and Beyond:

When you are young football player from Germany and Bayern Munich comes calling for you it’s hard to say no. Leroy Sane is no different and he could not resist the temptation of signing for the German giants. He signed for Bayern in 2020 for a transfer fee of 54 million. Sane has 22 goals and 25 assists in 72 games for Bayern in the two years he has played there.

40 caps for German national team scoring 11 times. Playing for the best club in the country, Leroy Sane is fairing well in his life. Despite that, Leroy Sane has a lot more to achieve in football before hanging up his boots and drinking that retirement beer!
