Manchester United are only one point away from qualifying for this season’s Champions League knockouts following their dominant 4-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday night.
The Turkish Super Lig champions had one the first encounter on home soil three weeks ago but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side proved it was just a one-off.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a stunning half volley from 20 yards before the Portuguese superstar doubled United’s lead with a tap in from close range 12 minutes later when goalkeeper Mert Gunok spilled the ball into his path.
The game was over 10 minutes before the break when Victor Lindelof’s long ball released Marcus Rashford down the wing. The forward took the ball inside the penalty area only to be tripped. Rashford picked himself up to take the spot kick and make it 3-0.
Solskjaer was able to rest some stars before the hour as Bruno Fernandes and Rashford were both taken off and the game went into a bit of a lull.
Istanbul put some late pressure on the English Premier League side’s goal and scored a consolation through Deniz Turuc’s direct free kick that David de Gea probably should have kept out.
A late counter-attack from Manchester United saw Daniel James score in stoppage time. It was the Welsh international’s second goal in his last 48 appearances for the Red Devils.
United’s final two group games are at home to Paris Saint-Germain and away to RB Leipzig.
