Manchester United’s £80 million acquisition of Harry Maguire from Leicester City made him the most expensive defender in the world last summer.
The 27-year-old product of the Sheffield United youth academy has had a rough time at Old Trafford.
Maguire has been part of the defence that shipped six goals at home to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month, that were beaten 1-3 at home by Crystal Palace at the start of the season, and that have generally been leaky under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The centre-back was absent when the rest of his teammates were able to go to Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain and come away with a 2-1 win less than a week ago.
I’ve never been a fan of the defender – not for Leicester, not for England. He was even relegated with Hull City. Leicester kept more clean sheets in their first season without him rather than their last season with him.
It’s not just his lack of pace, but the Manchester United captain’s positioning is woeful for a Premier League player in general, let-alone someone that set the club back a staggering £80 million.
Former Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans was actually better for Leicester than Maguire, during their final season together at the King Power Stadium.
Many feel Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be brave to drop Harry Maguire, given his price tag and his club captaincy. However, there’s little left for the Norwegian to lose – the Red Devils are down in 15th and a trio of Axel Tuanzebe, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were able to keep £300 million worth of talent in Kylian Mbappe and Neymar quiet.
