There is a growing number of Manchester United fans who are wondering what it is that Michael Carrick actually does.
Since joining the club back in 2006 for a fee of £18 million, Carrick has played almost 200 games for the current Premier League Champions and has rarely come in for any real criticism from the United faithful but that looks to have changed in recent weeks.
The 28-year old is more than likely going to be on the plane to South Africa as part of Fabio Capello’s 23-man England squad but personally, I think there are a considerable amount of better options in the central midfield role than Carrick.
I was surprised to see that Carrick has made more starts than Darren Fletcher this season for United. In my book, Fletcher is a much better player than Carrick. The Scot is a far better reader of the game and can actually hold onto possession of the football whilst under pressure from the opposition.
In my opinion, Carrick is one of the most overrated players in the Premier League and the sooner Sir Alex Ferguson realises that, the better for United.
