Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole have today both been strongly linked with summer moves to the world’s richest club, Manchester City.
Gerrard, 29, has already been linked with possible moves to the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan in recent days after it was claimed the England midfielder is looking to leave Merseyside due to the lack of silverware coming his way.
With just over half the season now gone, Liverpool are already out of the Champions League, the Premier League title race, the Carling Cup and the FA Cup raising question marks over Gerrard’s long-term future at Anfield. We all know about Liverpool’s current financial problems and to be honest, should a bid of £40 million plus come in for Gerrard in the summer, I can’t see them rejecting it. It will be interesting to see if Gerrard himself would be interested in a move to Eastlands.
Meanwhile, Joe Cole is another name who may be on his way to City come the end of the season. Cole, 28, has yet to agree a new deal at Stamford Bridge and as a result is free to leave the club come the end of the season (should he not sign a new contract).
The former West Ham man is apparently holding out for a new deal worth £120,000 a week, however Chelsea are unwilling to go above £100,000 leaving Cole’s future firmly in the balance. Several clubs, including Tottenham and Manchester United are apparently interested in Cole, however with City, money isn’t an issue and knowing them they would probably offer Cole £150,000 to make sure they got their man.
