Tipped by many at the start of the season to win their first Premier League title ever, Liverpool have today fallen to their third defeat of the season at the hands of Chelsea, leaving everyone wondering just what has gone wrong.
Having started the season as 7/2 third favourites to win the title, they are now 8/1 fourth favourites and I think it’s fair to say, that is a woeful price. Considering the way they have played so far this season, they should be at least 20/1.
With just eight games gone this season, it is perhaps to early to write off Liverpool, but I think it’s fair to say, they won’t be winning the title this season.
The opening day defeat at Tottenham, coupled with the embarrassing home defeat at the hands of Aston Villa have shown us all that this current Liverpool side clearly aren’t capable of winning a title. They came close last season, however that was when they had a certain Xabi Alonso, who is now a Real Madrid player.
Liverpool fans can continue to point the finger at the American owners or blame the departure of Alonso for their poor form, but the simple fact of the matter is, to win the titles you need a great squad of players, not just a quality starting eleven. The likes of Lucas and Babel aren’t title winning players. They are simply mediocre players, who, quite frankly, should be playing for clubs like West Ham or Fulham, with all due respect to those two clubs.
It must be so frustrating for Liverpool fans, who have seen their side win numerous games by four goals plus this season and then lose to the likes of Spurs and Villa, who Liverpool really should be beating. As things stand, Liverpool are sitting in fifth place in the Premier League table and for me, if they don’t get their act together soon, they may be finishing there come the end of May.
