Is Fernando Torres really worth £70 million?

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has today claimed that Fernando Torres is worth at least £70 million following the news that two Premier League clubs made bids for the Spanish striker last summer.

Since moving to Anfield back in 2007, Torres, 25, has become one of, if not, the best striker in the world. His goalscoring record since moving to the Premier League speaks for itself. 58 goals in 92 appearances.

Speaking earlier today, Benitez had this to say about his star striker : “How much is he worth? Well at least £70 million, you would say. I’m not saying he’s the best in the world because he is young and can get better, but of course he is one of the best, and he can still improve if he wants to.

“This year we had some agents acting for other English clubs who were coming to us asking about the price of Torres – with big, big figures – but we said that he’s not for sale.”

If Cristiano Ronaldo is worth £80 million, then I would agree with Benitez that Torres is worth at least £70 million. Without him, I feel Liverpool would struggle to make it into the top four every year, however with him in the side Liverpool are now serious title contenders.
